Food Labeling Compliance for UK Shopify Merchants: What You Need to Know

If you sell food products through your Shopify store, UK law requires you to display specific product information — and getting it wrong carries real consequences. Here's a practical guide to what's required and how to stay compliant without drowning in manual data entry.

Key regulation

The UK Food Information Regulations 2014 (FIR 2014) — derived from EU Regulation 1169/2011 (FIC) — sets out mandatory labeling requirements for pre-packed food products sold to consumers, including online sales.

What Information Must Appear on Your Product Listings?

Under FIR 2014, pre-packed food sold online must display the following information clearly and accessibly to the consumer before purchase is completed:

  • Product name
  • List of ingredients (in descending order by weight)
  • Allergen information — all 14 regulated allergens must be emphasised within the ingredient list
  • Quantity of certain ingredients where highlighted in the name or by an image
  • Net quantity
  • Date of minimum durability (best before) or use-by date
  • Any special storage conditions
  • Name and address of the food business operator
  • Country or place of origin (for certain categories)
  • Instructions for use where necessary
  • Alcohol content (if above 1.2% ABV)
  • Nutrition declaration (mandatory since December 2016)

For online food retailers specifically, the nutrition declaration and allergen information must be available before the point of sale — not just on the physical packaging when it arrives. This means your Shopify product pages are legally required to carry this information.

The 14 Regulated Allergens

UK and EU law requires the following allergens to be clearly emphasised wherever they appear in an ingredient list — typically bold, italic, or underlined:

Celery
Cereals containing gluten
Crustaceans
Eggs
Fish
Lupin
Milk
Molluscs
Mustard
Peanuts
Sesame
Soybeans
Sulphur dioxide & sulphites
Tree nuts

Getting allergen labeling wrong is not just a compliance risk — it's a public health risk. The Food Standards Agency actively monitors online food retailers, and enforcement action can include improvement notices, prosecution, and product recalls.

UK HFSS Rules and TikTok Shop

If you advertise food products through TikTok Shop or other regulated platforms, the UK's High Fat, Salt or Sugar (HFSS) rules add another layer of compliance. Products that score above the HFSS threshold under the UK Nutrient Profiling Model are subject to advertising restrictions — they cannot be promoted with paid social advertising on certain platforms.

TikTok Shop requires merchants to declare HFSS status for food products via a product metafield. If this is missing or inaccurate, your products can be suppressed or removed from the platform.

The Practical Problem: Manual Entry at Scale

Most Shopify food merchants face the same operational challenge: they have hundreds or thousands of SKUs, each requiring accurate ingredient lists, structured allergen data, and a nutrition declaration. Sourcing this manually — from packaging, supplier spec sheets, or third-party databases — is time-consuming and error-prone.

Common failure modes include:

  • Uploading photos of product packaging to satisfy the requirement — these are then indexed by social ad platforms as image content and can be served in misleading contexts
  • Copy-pasting ingredient lists without emphasising allergens correctly
  • Missing products that were added to the catalog but never enriched
  • Nutrition data that doesn't match the actual product (wrong region variant, wrong serving size)

How DataMintify Automates Compliance

DataMintify is built specifically to solve this problem for Shopify food merchants. Using a product barcode, it:

  • Searches 5 certified global food databases — including government datasets, commercial barcode registries, and community-verified sources — to retrieve verified nutrition data and ingredient lists
  • Automatically detects and emphasises all 14 regulated allergens within the ingredient list
  • Formats nutrition information in a standard, consumer-readable layout within your product description
  • Populates Shopify's standard allergen metafields for downstream use by apps and channels
  • Calculates UK HFSS status and sets the custom.tiktok_hfss metafield automatically
  • Saves a restore point of your original product description so you can always roll back

For products that aren't found in any database, DataMintify lets you contribute the product's data to a global open food database from within the app and then retries enrichment automatically — meaning you're never stuck with a compliance gap.
